Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, just hours before US President Donald Trump’s scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

During the phone call, PM Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position on the Ukraine war, stressing the need for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared details of the conversation. “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” he posted.

Putin Briefs Modi on Talks With Trump

According to official statements, President Putin updated PM Modi on his recent discussions with Donald Trump in Alaska.

The Trump-Putin meeting, held last week, was part of Washington’s push to secure a Ukraine ceasefire. While no agreement was signed, Trump claimed “big progress” had been made. He had earlier warned Russia of “very severe consequences” if the war continued.

Following the talks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that both sides agreed a comprehensive peace deal would be more effective than a temporary ceasefire, which often collapses.

Trump to Host Zelensky at White House

Just days after his Alaska summit with Putin, President Trump is set to meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Monday. The meeting, also involving key European leaders, is expected to focus on advancing ceasefire negotiations and potential pathways toward peace.

India, Russia Face Tariff Heat From Trump

Beyond the Ukraine conflict, Trump has also targeted India and Russia with steep trade tariffs. Last month, he announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s “very high tariffs” on American products, as well as its purchase of Russian oil and participation in BRICS.

Just a week later, Trump doubled down, adding another 25% tariff, effectively pushing the US tariff rate on India to 50%. He also continued to criticize both India and Russia over their trade and energy ties.

India’s balancing act maintaining strategic ties with Russia while calling for peace in Ukraine comes at a critical moment, as global powers weigh their next moves in the prolonged war.
