New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated two major highway projects aimed at easing Delhi’s chronic traffic congestion a crucial stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway. Together, the projects cost around ₹11,000 crore and are expected to reduce travel time across Delhi-NCR by up to 60%, officials said.

Big Boost For Delhi-NCR Connectivity

Speaking at the inauguration event in Rohini, PM Modi said the projects reflect his government’s vision of building “world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility.”

“I congratulate the people of Delhi-NCR for this modern connectivity. When the world looks at India, it looks first at our capital, Delhi. We have to make Delhi a model of a developed India,” the Prime Minister said, adding that his government had worked consistently to improve transport in the region over the past decade.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said the two projects are expected to cut Delhi’s traffic jams by at least 50%, while Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini noted that his state will be one of the biggest beneficiaries.

Urban Extension Road-II: A Semi-Circle Lifeline For Delhi

The Urban Extension Road-II is a six-lane expressway stretching 75 km, forming a semi-circle on Delhi’s western side. Starting from NH-44, it passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka before joining NH-48 near Mahipalpur.

On Sunday, PM Modi opened the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch, built at a cost of ₹5,580 crore. This stretch includes new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, promising to ease bottlenecks on Delhi’s Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the new spurs will also improve industrial connectivity, goods movement, and access to NCR towns, apart from drastically cutting commute time. Officials estimate a 40–60% reduction in travel time between Indira Gandhi International Airport and key parts of southwest and northwest Delhi.

Dwarka Expressway Delhi Section: Connecting Metro, Rail, And Highways

The second project inaugurated today is a 10.1-km Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway, developed at a cost of ₹5,360 crore. It is designed to provide faster access to Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka cluster bus depot.

This stretch is divided into two parts:

  • 5.9 km from Shiv Murti intersection to Dwarka Sector-21 Road Under Bridge
  • 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana border, linking the Dwarka Expressway with UER-II

Last year, PM Modi had inaugurated the 19-km Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway. With today’s launch, Delhi’s portion is also operational, creating a crucial corridor for faster intercity connectivity.

Green Push: Recycling And Tree Transplantation

The government highlighted that both projects were implemented with a focus on sustainability. Waste material was recycled, and trees were transplanted instead of being felled, underlining the environment-friendly approach to Delhi’s infrastructure expansion.
