ChatGPT Down: Thousands of Users Report Outage
OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, faced a major outage on Wednesday, leaving users across the globe frustrated. According to Downdetector, a service that tracks online disruptions, hundreds of outage reports started flooding in after 11 am.
Within just 20 minutes, users from multiple countries flagged issues, making the outage a trending topic on social media.
India Among the Worst-Hit Regions
The outage didn’t spare Indian users either. At one point, over 500 users in India reported problems on Downdetector. However, by 3:30 pm, the number of reports had dropped significantly to just 42 cases, suggesting that services were gradually being restored.
Among the global reports:
- 85% faced problems directly with ChatGPT.
- 13% encountered issues on the OpenAI website.
- 2% reported glitches with the Writing Coach tool.
So far, OpenAI has not released an official statement regarding the cause of the outage.
Users Report Errors on Both Web and Mobile Apps
While some users confirmed that the chatbot was working fine, others complained about persistent network errors on both the website and the mobile app version of ChatGPT. The inconsistent experience has added to user frustration, especially among professionals relying on the AI tool for work.
A Look Back at Past ChatGPT Outages
This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has faced downtime. The AI platform has witnessed multiple service failures in recent months, including:
- January 23, 2025: Global outage lasting over three hours, affecting users in Spain, Argentina, and the US.
- December 26, 2024: A major glitch paralyzed access to the chatbot.
- February 5, 2025: More than 22,000 reports on Downdetector marked one of the year’s largest outages.
- Recent incidents: ChatGPT briefly went offline for about 10 minutes on September 3, 2025, with additional disruptions noted on September 2 and September 1.
These repeated issues highlight ongoing stability concerns with the widely used AI service.
