Bank Holiday Alert

Planning a bank visit around mid-August? You may need to reschedule. Banks across India will remain closed for three consecutive days from August 15 to 17, 2025, as the 79th Independence Day overlaps with Janmashtami in several states, followed by the regular Sunday holiday.

While physical branches will not operate, customers can continue to access essential banking services through ATMs, internet banking, mobile banking apps, and UPI transactions, which remain available 24/7 unless interrupted by scheduled maintenance.

Bank Holiday Schedule in August 2025

  • August 15 (Friday) – Independence Day
All banks across India will remain closed nationwide.
  • August 16 (Saturday) – Janmashtami/Krishna Jayanthi
Banks will be closed in 18 cities, including:
Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Srinagar, and Vijayawada.
  • August 17 (Sunday) – Weekly Holiday
Banks will remain closed nationwide as per the standard Sunday holiday.

How Customers Can Manage During Bank Holidays

Even though branches remain shut, digital banking services ensure that money transfers, UPI payments, bill payments, and ATM withdrawals are unaffected. Customers are advised to complete any urgent branch-related work such as cheque clearances, account updates, or locker access before the long weekend begins.

RBI Bank Holiday Calendar for August 2025

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks observe holidays on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. In August 2025, banks have 15 holidays in total, which include national holidays, regional festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi, and regular weekend offs.

This extended bank holiday weekend in August 2025 may cause inconvenience for those planning in-person banking tasks, so make sure to plan transactions in advance.
