Nalanda was a centre of learning from the fifth century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Nalanda flourished under the Gupta Empire’s patronage in the 5th and 6th centuries and later under Harsha, the emperor of Kannauj.

Most of our knowledge of Nalanda comes from pilgrim monks’ writings from Asia, such as Xuanzang and yijing,who travelled to the Mahavihara in the 7th century CE. History of Nalanda would be the history of Mahayanist Buddhism. One of the best historical places to visit in Bihar.

Mahabodhi Temple – Bodh Gaya

The Mahabodhi Temple, or the Mahabodhi, is an ancient and most famous temple but much rebuilt and restored, a Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, marking the Buddha’s location to have attained enlightenment, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site contains a descendant of the Bodhi Tree. Buddha gained enlightenment and has been a significant pilgrimage destination for Hindus and Buddhism for over two thousand years. Some elements probably date to the period of Ashoka.

It is now visible on the ground, essentially dating from the 7th century CE, perhaps somewhat earlier, and several significant restorations since the 19th century. 

This stylistic feature has continued in Jain and Hindu temples to the present day and influenced Buddhist Architecture in other countries, in forms like the pagoda. 

Bodh Gaya (in Gaya districts) is about 96km from Patna, Bihar.

Patna Museum – Patna

Patna Museum is the state museum of the Indian state of Bihar. 

Started on 3rd April 1917 during the British Raj to house the historical artefacts found in the vicinity of Patna; it is in the style of Mughal and Rajput architecture and is known locally as the Jadu Ghar. 

Most of the early collections have now been transferred to Bihar Museum.

The British constructed the Museum to conserve and display the historical artefacts found in the vicinity of the state capital..

The concept of having a Museum arose in 1912 after Bihar and Bengal were separated.

In Patna Museum, there are many collections of archaeological objects, coins, art objects, paintings, instruments, textiles, paintings, bronze images and sculptures and terra cotta images by Hindu and Buddhist artists. One of the best places to visit in Bihar.

The fossils of a tree said to be more than 200 millions years old is on display.

Patna Zoo – Patna

Patna Zoo

Patna zoo is also known as Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, is located off Bailey Road in Patna. 

The park was opened to the public as a zoo in 1973. The park is Patna’s most frequented picnic spot, with more than 36000 visitors on new year’s day.

The park was first established as botanical garden in 1969. Since 1973, this park has been a biological park, combining a botanical garden with a zoo.

Viswa shanti stupa – Rajgir

Rajgir is an ancient city and a municipal council in Nalanda districts in Bihar.

The city of Rajgir was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha, a state that would eventually evolve into the Mauryan empire.

The city of Rajgir became one of the Buddha’s most important preaching locations.

Viswa Shanti Stupa is one of the 80 peace pagodas globally, making it one of the popular tourist attractions in Rajgir. 

Ti was built in 1969 and is officially the oldest peace pagoda in India. As it is nestled in the hills, you can take around 500 steps to reach the Stupa. Or else there is a ropeway service.

It was here that Gautam Budha spent several months meditating and preaching at Gridhra-Kuta(Hill of the vultures).  

He also delivered some of his famous sermons and initiated king Bimbisara of Magadha and countless others to Buddhism. One of the awesome places to visit in Bihar with family and friends.
