IMD issues red alert for Delhi

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi, warning residents of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning on Saturday evening. The alert, valid for three hours, remains in place until 8:11 PM, raising concerns over waterlogging, traffic disruption, and safety in low-lying areas.

IMD Red Alert: Which Areas Will Be Hit?

According to the IMD, intense showers and gusty winds are expected across several parts of the national capital. Areas likely to be affected include Civil Lines, Red Fort, Lajpat Nagar, Narela, Bawana, Alipur, and ITO, along with nearby regions. Officials have urged people to stay indoors and avoid venturing out unless necessary.

Rainfall Across Delhi-NCR

The red alert comes after widespread rain was recorded earlier on Saturday across north, central, south, and southeast Delhi, as well as parts of Noida. The weather department has also forecast moderate to heavy showers on Sunday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, which could impact daily life and travel across the Delhi-NCR region.

Waterlogging Complaints in the City

The Public Works Department (PWD) reported at least 10 complaints of waterlogging in different parts of the city on Saturday. However, most of the clogged areas were cleared within an hour, officials told PTI.

Delhi Weather Update: Temperature and Air Quality

Despite the showers, the maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 34.5°C, about 0.3 degrees below normal, while the minimum stood at 25.7°C, slightly lower than the seasonal average. The relative humidity was recorded at 76% at 5:30 PM, making conditions sticky despite the rainfall.

On a positive note, the air quality in Delhi remained in the “satisfactory” category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 93 at 6 PM, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
